COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) is calling on the next generation of conservationists to step into the woods this summer. Registration is now officially open for Camp Canopy, a premier week-long experience for high school students interested in forestry, wildlife management, and the great outdoors.

Prospective campers have until Friday, May 29, 2026, to secure their spot for a week that blends education with adventure.

A Hands-On Look at Conservation Careers

Operating since 1950, Camp Canopy is designed to give students a realistic look at professional paths in natural resources.

“Camp Canopy gives students an opportunity to truly experience what a career in natural resources looks like,” said Jeremy Scherf, Camp Canopy Co-Director and ODNR Division of Forestry Service Forestry Manager. “They get hands-on learning, meaningful time with professionals in the field, and the chance to form connections that often last long after the camp ends.”

The 2026 Curriculum

Held at the FFA Camp Muskingum on Leesville Lake in Carroll County, the camp runs from Sunday, June 7, through Friday, June 12, 2026.

Campers will participate in core classes including:

  • Forest Ecology & Silviculture: Understanding how forests grow and are managed.
  • Wildlife Management: Learning the science behind maintaining healthy animal populations.
  • Tree Identification & Forest Products: Discovering the diverse species of Ohio and how they support our economy.
  • New for 2026: Special annually rotating sessions led by guest professionals to showcase specific facets of land management.

The week concludes with a graduation ceremony where college scholarships are awarded to select campers who demonstrate exceptional interest and aptitude.
