COLUMBUS — Resources are now available to help Ohio families, caregivers, and local agencies utilize a new statewide database designed to assist first responders in emergencies, according to State Representative Brian Lorenz.
The initiative, known as Keith’s Law, creates a voluntary statewide database where individuals with special needs can share vital information with first responders before a crisis occurs. Information submitted to the database will be linked to each county 9-1-1 system, allowing emergency personnel to access relevant details when dispatched.
“Keith’s Law provides our first responders with the tools they need to better protect and serve Ohioans with disabilities,” Lorenz said. “This common-sense, voluntary statewide database ensures that when every second counts, our public safety professionals can respond with greater awareness, compassion, and effectiveness. This is about supporting independence, enhancing safety, and respecting the dignity of all Ohio families.”
The database will be administered by Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities in partnership with the Ohio Department of Public Safety.
Available resources include a Keith’s Law Disability Verification Form and an informational guide titled 5 Things to Know About Keith’s Law. These tools are intended to help families and caregivers enroll, explain how the information will be used in emergencies, and guide first responders in accessing and applying the data effectively in the field.
