LANCASTER, Ohio — The Lancaster Police Department is mourning the loss of Anthony “Tony” Salvatori, a Vietnam War veteran, longtime community leader, and the department’s chaplain for more than 18 years.
Police officials said Salvatori’s guidance, compassion, and steady presence left a lasting impact on officers and staff throughout his years of service.
“Tony was a dedicated servant to the Lancaster community,” the department said in a statement. “His presence, guidance, and support meant a great deal to many of our officers and staff.”
Salvatori’s path to service began at a young age. As a teenager, he was encouraged by a local police officer to enlist in the U.S. Army. He followed that advice, beginning his military service in July 1967 and completing two tours in Vietnam. After returning home, Salvatori pursued a calling to ministry, earning a degree from Ohio Christian University.
In 1995, Salvatori became the Executive Director of Maywood Mission, a role he held for 23 years. During that time, he led efforts to provide food, care, and assistance to individuals and families in need, strengthening support systems across the Lancaster community.
As chaplain for the Lancaster Police Department, Salvatori worked closely with law enforcement, offering counsel and encouragement while promoting values of integrity, loyalty, and community service.
Salvatori is survived by his wife, Elaine, their two sons, and five grandchildren. No funeral services have been announced at this time.
The Lancaster Police Department has asked the community to keep Salvatori’s family and loved ones in their thoughts as they remember his life of service and dedication.
