Disruptive Tariffs Hurt Ohio’s Small Businesses

Small businesses like mine keep Ohio’s economy going and make today’s digital marketplace possible. Thriving as an online retailer means building customer loyalty, keeping costs in check, and sourcing goods from around the world to stay competitive.

But despite how hard we work or plan, small businesses cannot prepare for constant disruption from Washington. We’re tired of playing defense against policies we didn’t create but pay the price for every day.

The recent surge in tariffs is an enormous disruptor for small business owners like me. Each new trade restriction creates uncertainty and forces us to reevaluate our operations with little notice – including adjustments to prices, inventory, and shipping. While markets fluctuate, business confidence erodes just as quickly, undermining our ability to grow and invest.

Though the Trump Administration aims tariffs at foreign governments, the consequences hit American small businesses hard too, which make up 97% of U.S. importers. Not only are these policies leaving small sellers, like myself, at a competitive disadvantage, but they will drive up prices for consumers on products they need and enjoy.

I urge our state’s congressional delegation to reject broad, unpredictable tariffs and promote stable trade policies. Supporting America’s small businesses means strengthening the digital marketplace that drives innovation, opportunity, and economic growth across our state and nation.
