ZALESKI, OH – June 17, 2025
Austin Powder Holdings Company is responding to concerns following a nitrogen oxide (NOₓ) release at its Red Diamond Plant in Zaleski on the morning of June 11 that forced residents to temporarily evacuate. Company leadership has issued a formal apology and outlined steps being taken to ensure safety and accountability in the wake of the incident.

In a letter addressed to the residents of Zaleski, John D. Rathbun, President and CEO of Austin Powder, acknowledged the inconvenience and disruption caused by the chemical release and emphasized that public safety remains the company’s highest priority.

“We fully recognize the seriousness of what occurred and the inconvenience it caused our neighbors,” Rathbun stated.

The incident was triggered by a chemical reaction inside a partially filled nitric acid storage tank, which led to the venting of nitrogen oxide gas. While the nitric acid itself remained contained, the release prompted precautionary evacuations in the area.

Safety Measures and Ongoing Evaluation

Rathbun noted that the company’s built-in safety systems functioned as designed and that the situation was promptly stabilized. Austin Powder worked closely with the Ohio EPA and local first responders to ensure proper handling and assessment.

Comprehensive inspections and evaluations are underway, and the plant is expected to safely resume operations as early as Monday, June 16—pending final clearance from regulatory agencies. The company also confirmed that there has been no contamination of drinking water or soil.

Reimbursement for Residents

Austin Powder is offering reimbursement for reasonable evacuation-related expenses, such as hotel stays, transportation, and meals. Impacted residents are encouraged to contact the company at 216-839-5469 or [email protected] to begin the claims process.

A Pledge of Transparency

Rathbun stated that an internal investigation is being conducted, and the company is prepared to implement further safety reviews if necessary.

“We remain committed to clear, open communication and will continue to provide updates as we move forward,” he said. “We are proud to be part of this community, and we are committed to restoring your confidence in us.”
