PICKAWAY – “We have two kids going to the JR Olympics this year for wrestling, Senior Jacob Williams and Sophomore Lian Wilson, said Todd Nace head coach at Teays Valley.
Williams and Wilson placed in a special tournament, and they were asked to be on one of 4 teams that Ohio takes to the Jr Olympics hosted in Iowa. “This gives Ohio kids the chance to wrestle the best kids in Ohio and some of the best kids in the Nation. Jacob went two years ago. Teays Valley has had an average of two to three kids a year going on this trip every year.
“The wrestlers have to come up with the money to support the trip, and it is about eight hundred dollars per kid. That money pays for nearly everything for the trip food, housing, busing, and outfits. Only four teams of 14 wrestlers from Ohio, around 50 kids in the whole state get the privilege to go to this event, said Nace.
There are different levels of national tournaments, and this is the second tier level. This wrestling event is an AAU sponsored program located in the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines, IA. “As a Wrestler, you can individually score well and also score for the team. Our kids come back with a lot of experience about 15-17 matches in a week, that’s about half of the regular season. It is Olympic style wrestling that’s different than how we wrestle in high school, so we have a training session before they go so they are not completely surprised by the freestyle. When the kids come back to the team, you can see a big difference in their attitude, leadership, and swagger. Its important in my opinion, for our kids, to get experiences like this,” said Nace.
If anyone would like to contribute directly you can contact Todd Nace on Facebook; he has a direct link on his Facebook, so no money directly goes into my hands. We will be fundraising until August 1, the money bucket locations in the area are.
