Cora Edith Rainey

Cora Edith Rainey, age 79, of Columbus, formerly of Ashville, passed away on April 8, 2017, after having been ill for a number of years.

Cora was born Aug. 17, 1937, to the late Bessie and Dave Whitt.

She is preceded in death by husband, Robert C. Rainey Jr; daughter, Annette Rainey; sister, Myrtle Crum; brother, Walter Whitt; and sister, Elsie Whitt-Clingerman.

Cora is survived by her son, David (Sandra) Rainey; daughter, Kathy Lawrence; grandchildren whom she raised, Melissa Rainey (and her sons and “Grandma’s babies,” William and Jaxon) and Christopher Rainey; other grandchildren including grandson, Justin Rainey, and granddaughters, Jennifer Rainey, Megan Rainey and Becky Joseph. Cora’s siblings included sisters, Mary Bell Kay, Yvonne Rodas and Virginia Katherine Webber; and brothers, Junior Whitt, Corbin Whitt and Billy Wayne Whitt.

Edith will be missed for her comedic wit and her sassy attitude. Her desire to love and care for her family should be an inspiration to us all.

The family wishes to thank everyone for their love, respect and support during this time of mourning.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at the Oliver-Cheek Funeral Home, 420 W. Main St.. Ashville. A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 13, 2017, at Harrison Township Cemetery, 5501 S. Union St., South Bloomfield, with grandson, Justin Rainey, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the funeral home, c/o the Cora Rainey Memorial Fund.
