James W. Burns

James Winfield Burns, 75, of Grove City, died 11:07 a.m. Saturday, March 25, 2017, at the Monterey Rehabilitation Center, Grove City, following a brief illness.

He was born Nov. 6, 1941, in Chillicothe, to the late John R. and Margaret (Barnhart) Burns.

He is survived by his wife, Laura Rebecca (Bone) Burns; a brother, Dr. John Burns; four children, Michelle Burns, Rebecca (Mark) Pfeifer, James Burns and Michael (Donna) Burns; six grandchildren, all of Indianapolis, Indiana; five step-children, Theresa (John) Schueth of Indianapolis, Indiana, Lisa Hirsch (Tom McDonough) of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Laura (Lew) Vollmar of Circleville and Stephen (Kim) Hirsch and Michael (Carrie) Hirsch of Chillicothe; and 14 step-grandchildren.

Jim graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1959 and attended Ohio State University.

He was a 20-year veteran of the US Air Force during the Vietnam era, serving in several areas of the United Sates and various locations in the Far East. While in the service, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Army Commendation Medal and several unit awards.

After retirement from the Air Force, he spent many years working in the computer industry. He retired from the Sperry/Unisys Corp., and retired from the State of Ohio.

He was an avid bridge player and attained the rank of Life Master in 1981.

He will be remembered for his quick wit and fun sense of humor, and for his love of music and history. He married his high school sweetheart on July 7, 1993, and spent his twilight years enjoying his life with his wife and soul mate, Laura (Becky).

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Grove City, OLPH Silver Streaks and the American Legion Post 888.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Thursday, March 30, 2017, at St. Mary Church, Rev. Lawrence Hummer, Celebrant. Military graveside services conducted by the US Air Force and Ross County Veterans Honor Guard will follow in St. Margaret Cemetery. Friends may call 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Haller Funeral Home & Crematory, Chillicothe, where a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m.
