Lowell C. Cleary

Lowell C. Cleary, 84, of Ashville, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017, at Mt. Carmel West Medical Center in Columbus.

He was born on Sept. 10, 1932, in Greenup County, Kentucky, to the late Mary Cleary Schmehling.

Lowell was a 1950 graduate of McKell High School in South Shore, Kentucky.

After graduating, he served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, then returned home from the service and went to work at the Atomic Plant in Piketon until about 1965.

Lowell started working at the former Columbus Auto Parts, where he retired in 1988. He also enjoyed working in the dirt, so he started Cleary Excavating about 40 years ago.

Lowell was an antique car enthusiast and was an avid gardner.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Joyce Ann (Martin) Cleary, in 2005.

He is survived by his children, Patricia Cleary of Portage, Indiana, Charles (Connie) Cleary of Grove City, Alan (Connie) Cleary of Ashville, Cheryl (John) Byerly of Columbus and Philip (Flo) Cleary of Ashville; 10 grandchildren, Joe, Jessica, Jennifer, Shannon, Alexander (A.J.), Trisha, Nikki, Desiree, Cathy and Philip Jr.; and numerous great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2017, at the Oliver-Cheek Funeral Home, 420 W. Main St., Ashville, with a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, with Rev. Kelly Copeland officiating. Interment will follow in Reber Hill Cemetery, Ashville, with military honors by AMVETS Post 2256.
