A candy cane sale at Ashville Elementary School recently netted $930 for the Ashville food pantry.

This fundraiser was sponsored by the second grade students with help from the entire student body and staff members.

Staff members donated the candy canes, which were sold by fifth grade students during each lunch period for three days. The students and staff sent notes attached to the candy canes to their classmates, teachers and coworkers.

“This started out as an idea of Mrs. Erin Wilson,” said Megan Ehman, second grade teacher. “We knew the food pantry was in need and especially around the holidays. Students love to give little notes, and we know they like candy canes.”

Ehman said students learned the importance of giving and not always receiving.

“We also talked about how full our heart is when we know we made someone else happy or smile,” she said. “Everyone at Ashville was amazed at the generosity of the students.”
