Ella M. Belt

Ella May Belt, age 101, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at Carriage Court Assisted Living in Washington Court House, where she resided since June 2014.

She was born Oct. 29, 1915, in North Baltimore, to Joseph R. and Gaily E. (Oren) Smith.

She was a 1933 graduate of Dublin High School; a 1937 graduate of The Ohio State University; and a member of Phi Upsilon and Omicron Nu honorary societies.

She taught Home Economics in Mount Cory High School in Hancock County and taught English and French at Derby High School in Pickaway County.

She married high school sweetheart, R. Carleton Belt, on Dec. 24, 1937, and they moved to Fayette County where they operated a grain and livestock farm. She and her husband owned and operated R.C. Belt Inc., a farm implement and truck franchise in Washington Court House.

She was an active member of Madison Mills United Methodist Church for over 60 years and a member of Conner Farm Women’s Club. She was an accomplished pianist and excellent seamstress and a 4-H club advisor in Fayette County.

She is survived by children, Ellen (John) Delay, Mt. Sterling, Robert (Nancy) Belt, Columbus, Joseph Belt, Orient, Jane Belt, Columbus, and David Belt, New York City; grandchildren, Cassandra (Larry) Furlong, Brenda Delay, Todd (Sue) Delay, Janine (Jay) Caslow, Karen (Richard) Wood, James (Jennifer) Belt and Thaddeus (Paula) Belt; 12 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by parents; husband, R. Carleton Belt (Dec. 22, 1996); sisters, Margaret Orr and Helen Jane Freeland; brothers, James Smith and Joseph Smith; and daughter-in-law, Annalee Belt.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2017, at the Porter-Tidd Funeral Home, Mt. Sterling. Family will receive friends one hour prior to time of service, Rev. Kim Wisecup officiating, with the interment following in Madison Mills Cemetery. Visitation will be be on Friday where family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m.
