PICKAWAY – PICCA Pickaway County Community Action Organization is a non-profit agency set up to empower people of poverty to become self-sufficient and improve their quality of life.

“The fresh produce program we started about two years ago, its free fresh produce for anyone who is 200% of poverty or less, that’s about 80% of Pickaway county residents.  So for the most part if your curious or in need of free produce you qualify.  I encourage people to come out and get fresh produce, especially our seniors.  We have people trying to offset a limited income, and this doesn’t cost anything its free.  Its a really good program we don’t always know what we are going to get we get sweet corn, apples, potatoes, zucchini, onions, you name it we’ve had it come through.   It’s through Mid Ohio Foodbank, we have distributed over 200,000 pounds of produce last year in Pickaway County and served 14,000 people.  We would like to see those numbers grow here in Pickaway County, we are trying to bring more food into the area to feed people,” said Amy Robinson P.I.C.C.A.

“We are always happy to feed people; we see a lot of seniors that are in low-income situations.  The whole goal is more food, more people, more help.  We want to break the stigma of use of a food pantry.  87% of Pickaway county are working, that are accessing the food pantry, not on food stamps.   Not getting assistance from working families, working single parents, couples, and seniors that have worked their whole lives.  These people are working but can’t afford fresh produce because its a little more expensive than pasta.  What I’ve heard is, “I can feed my kids for two days on a pot of pasta, not on a bunch of grapes.”  Well we want to bring in the fresh produce, so it stretches your dollar, said Robinson.

PICCA is offering a new location this year at Westfall Elementary School. Westfall cares the organization in charge of the new site. They are also providing backpack meals for kids to take home.
