OHIO – Ohio ranked 41st in the country in health report in the 2020 report, saying Ohioans smoke more than all but three other states, and ranks among the worst in sufficient sleep, nutrition and physical activity.

The Health Ranking report is one of the longest running annual report for reveiw of the county’s health on a state-by-state basis. New Hampsire recieved the best report for all 50 states.

Ohio had other struggles as well it struggled in child immunizations and preventable hospitalizations. The study found that only 6.3% of Ohioans consume two or more fruits and three or more vegetables daily only with the US average being 8%. Why this is important is studies say that diets high in fruits and vegetables help with chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

Why is that a big deal? The report says eating healthier has a 114.5 Billion impact on the nation’s economy that includes medical savings, improved productivity and increased lifespans.

Ohioans also ranked low on exercise only 20.9% of Ohioans get 150 minutes of aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week. US average is 23% of Americans.

The study also said that Ohioans are high in mental health issues, with 16.3% of the people in the state suffer from frequent mental distress, 12.7% from multiple chronic conditions, and 34.8% of Ohioans are suffering from obesity.

But it wasn’t all bad news, low prevalence of non-medical drug use (17th), low prevalence of severe housing problems (2nd) and low uninsured rate (15th)
