On April 23rd, 2019 at approximately 12:26 AM, The Logan Police Department responded to several reports of a subject throwing bricks through the windows of numerous residences near the 300 block of West Main Street.
While Logan Police Officers responded to the area, a nearby resident gave a description of a female suspect. A few minutes later, officers observed a female, matching the description, near the rear parking lot of the Hocking County Courthouse.
Officers observed visible smoke and fire coming from a window on the rear side of the Courthouse building and reported the fire to Hocking County 911. They requested response from the Logan Fire Department and assistance from the Hocking County Sheriff’s Office.
Once confronted, the female suspect pulled a large knife on officers and began running from the area, a brief foot pursuit was initiated which led to a nearby apartment on East Main Street. The female suspect barricaded herself inside and attempted to jump out of the second story window. While inside, the female suspect started a small fire inside the apartment and officers forced entry to extinguish the fire and apprehend the female.
While inside the apartment, officers observed what appeared to be a homemade incendiary or explosive device, along with the components to make more. The Logan Fire Department requested the assistance of the Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Columbus Division of Police Bomb Squad to evaluate the device.
Due to the incident involving the Hocking County Courthouse, the Hocking County Sheriff’s Office was called in to conduct a joint investigation with the Logan Police Department. Investigators from the Sheriff’s Office, State Fire Marshal’s Office, and Columbus Bomb Squad executed a search warrant on the apartment a short time later and collected various items of evidence.
The Columbus Bomb Squad confirmed what investigators seized from the residence to be an “improvised explosive device”.
