Do you want to save more? A guide to your spending habits and how to keep them under budget

Money may be a little tight sometimes and can get you wondering how you will be paying your bills next month. If that’s happening to you more often than you’d like, the first thing to do is to get yourself on a reasonable budget if you’re not already.

While the term “budget” can seem a little intimidating…or maybe even like something to dread, it doesn’t have to be. Just think of it as a way to control your spending and ensure that all of your needs are taken care of. You can come up with a budget yourself by looking at how much money you have left over after bills are paid and then making a smart plan for where that money will go, being sure to keep some for savings.

Of course, it’s also not a bad idea to have a professional financial advisor create a budget for you. No matter how you come up with your budget, however, the key is to stick to it. And, fortunately, there are many simple things you can do to curtail your spending and to stay at or maybe even under budget each pay period.

Stop Sporadic Shopping

Are you someone who likes to shop? If you regularly browse through stores or online selling sites even when there’s nothing in particular you need, you’re probably a bit of a shopping addict…or at least a shopping enthusiast.

However, when you’re trying to save money, sporadic shopping is a very bad habit to have. Though it may be hard, make a plan to only shop when there’s actually something you need. Anytime you go into a store, make sure you have a clear plan for what you will buy there.

And, if shopping is how you usually relax or socialize, channel that energy into something more productive and less costly, like exercising or spending time with friends. If you can stop unnecessary shopping, you’ll be surprised at how much money you’ll save.

Ditch Dining Out

Another habit to break when you’re trying to stay on budget is eating your lunches and dinners out. While restaurant food might taste good, it’s way overpriced. On top of the high prices, you also have to tip your servers, which ramps up the cost even more.

To save money and stay on your budget, commit to making your meals at home. Your money will stretch a lot further that way. This isn’t to say that you have to stop eating out for good, of course, but if you limit it to special occasions or even once a month or so, you’ll have a lot more money in your pocket.

Track Your Spending

If you’re like most people, then you probably glance at your bank balance online from time to time and consider that “balancing” your account. However, this overly relaxed mentality is not a good one for someone trying to stick to a budget. It’s all too easy to not realize how much you’re spending and to potentially even overdraft your account.

Get into the habit of tracking your spending each day. Request receipts when possible or write down the exact amount you spend each time you whip out your wallet. Then, at the end of the day, go through and deduct how much you’ve spent. Also, do a quick critique of your spending for the day. Did you spend more than you should have? Less?

By carefully tracking your spending daily and taking the time to think about where your money is going, you’ll not only have better control over your finances, but you’ll also train yourself to make smarter financial choices every time.
