VIRAL — Cloud Iridescence At Night

Marietta, Ohio — Our friends over at Ohio News & Weather (heard through Mid-Ohio Valley Weather Update) shared an interesting photo with the moon last night. You may have heard the term cloud iridescence, but that is usually seen during the day.

Cloud Iridescence refers to caused by especially tiny ice crystals or water droplets in the air. Larger ice crystals produce lunar or solar halos, but tiny ice crystals or water droplets cause light to be diffracted – spread out – creating this rainbow-like effect in the clouds. – EarthSky

On Wednesday Night over Marietta, OH, Emily Diehl sent the picture you saw above into our weather partners. As you can see, this took place at the right place, right time as she photographed it. It looks like an eye or something out of a movie! However, this is an example of cloud iridescence at night. It looks different at night due to the fact moonlight is very different from sunlight.
