CIRCLEVILLE – Tornado sirens that blared at 9:50 a.m. Friday were part of the statewide tornado drill, not only to test equipment but to remind residents of the importance of having an emergency plan.

The test was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed due to the winter storm.

Peak tornado season is generally April through July, according to the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness, but tornadoes can occur at any time during any season. Just last year on Christmas Eve, a small tornado touched down in Fairfield County, flipping a pickup truck and damaging multiple vehicles.

Statistics show 20 tornadoes affected Ohio last year.

For tornado safety, the Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness encourages Ohioans to DUCK:

D – Go DOWN to the lowest level
U – Get UNDER something
C – COVER your head
K – KEEP in shelter until the storm has passed.
