COMMERCIAL POINT – Residents of Commercial Point, including the Southern Point subdivision, are under a boil alert until further notice after E.coli was detected in the village water source.
Officials said no contamination has been found in public drinking water after it has been processed through the water treatment plant, but they continue to conduct sampling to determine the extent of the situation.
Recent flooding is being cited as the cause of the contamination to the village’s water source, which is located east of the Scioto River on state Route 762.
“Our well fields are located on the east side of the river, and our treatment plant is on the west side of the river,” said John Thompson, utility superintendent. “During flood events, we have to sample for water going into our system. That’s a routine thing for us. One of those samples we pulled Sunday morning, a 24-hour sample, came back (Monday) E.coli positive from the well field only.”
Thompson said while the source water from the well field showed contamination, the treated water coming out of the plant did not, but the village will continue to sample and monitor the situation.
The boil alert will remain in effect at least until all flood water has receded, he said.
“After the water recedes, we will get instruction from the Ohio EPA on what to do after that,” Thompson said.
According to the village’s Web site, employees will continue to conduct a thorough investigation to determine the source of the contamination.
