Karen A. Mateer

Karen Ann Mateer, age 73, passed at Berger Hospital on April 25, 2017, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on Feb. 5, 1944, in Ashland, to her parents, Raymond and Sarah Wiltrout.

Karen graduated from Hayesville High School and served honorably in the United States Army from 1962 to 1964. During her time in the military, Karen and George Mateer met at Fort Riley, Kansas, and later married on Aug. 6, 1963. They shared 53 wonderful years of marriage.

Karen worked for J.C. Penney and National City Bank in Circleville.

Karen was an active member of the Community United Methodist Church in her younger years, and she loved being a wife, mother and grandmother to her family.

Karen donated blood often, as it was in her nature to care for others, always more than herself.

She loved traveling with her family, and she especially loved beautiful Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Karen loved camping with her husband at Hocking Hills and Deer Creek State Parks.

Karen enjoyed helping with 4-H projects, and she loved to sew. She was an amazing cook and even won blue ribbons for her pumpkin bars in the Pumpkin Show.

Karen will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

Karen is preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Charles Wiltrout.

Left to mourn her passing is her loving husband, George Mateer; her children, Terry (Vicky) Mateer, Kimberly Ann Hall (William) Peters and Sharon Lynn Hall (Randy) Medley. Also left to mourn are her grandchildren, Christopher Peters, Jessica Mateer, Steven Peters, Justin Mateer and Elizabeth Ann Hall Peters.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2017, at Defenbaugh-Wise-Schoedinger Funeral Home, 151 E. Main St., Circleville. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 1, 2017, with Pastor William Pellum officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery.
