CIRCLEVILLE – In its second year of existence, the Pickaway County Family YMCA Dance team continues to be a force to be reckoned with. The dance team began its competitive season this month and has already made waves within dance organizations from across the nation.

This year’s dance team consists of six girls, ages 11 and 12, including Brooke Anderson, Sophie Stonerock and Reagan Stiverson of Logan Elm; Isabella Crego of Teays Valley; Carly Spence of Amanda; and Audrey Fausnaugh of New Hope Christian Academy.

In order to be a part of the team, girls had to attend try-outs and already be an active member of the YMCA Dance program. Members of the team work from September to March perfecting their routines for the competition season. This year the team is competing with a duet and two-group routines.

“It is a major time commitment for these girls,” said Natasha Anderson, Dance and Art Program coordinator. “In order to be on the team, they’re attending at least three dance classes a week total.”

Auditions to join the team are typically held in July and September. From that time on, the girls are spending much of their spare time learning or practicing routines.

The team most recently competed at the Star Bound National Talent Competition in Westerville, where the girls took home a variety of awards: Duet – Top Third Overall Gold in Intermediate age group, Small Group Jazz – High Gold and Small Group Modern – Gold in Intermediate age group.

This weekend, the girls will be traveling to The Aladdin Shrine Center for Starquest and will end the season April 26 with Studio Live, also at The Aladdin Shrine Center in Columbus. The competitions not only give the girls a chance to perform and learn about friendly competition, but also to make friends with fellow dancers.

Upcoming Pickaway County Family YMCA Dance activities include their spring recital April 18, with performances at 1 and 6 p.m. They also are going to be holding summer sessions this June and July.
