COLUMBUS–State Representative Gary Scherer (R-Circleville) today applauded the announcement of $10 million in grant funding by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Higher Education. The funding was allocated by the Ohio General Assembly as part of the Straight A Fund.

The purpose of the funding is to assist educators with earning credentials to teach College Credit Plus courses. Half of the $10 million will be used to help the institutions selected develop programs and offer free or reduced-cost courses to teachers. The remaining $5 million will allow those high schools, colleges, and universities support teachers as they obtain the qualifications to teach postsecondary courses.

“The allocation of the grant funding for this purpose will benefit both high school teachers and students,” Scherer said. “It will allow the teachers to further their education and earn more credentials while making college courses more convenient for students to take. It is a win-win scenario for education in Ohio.”

College Credit Plus is a program in Ohio that allows high schools students to earn college credits by taking courses at community colleges or universities. The college courses are free for students to take and help prepare students for college while accelerating their journey to a college degree.

With this funding, high school educators can become qualified to teach college-level courses, making the College Credit Plus program even more accessible for students.
