Margaret “Peggy” Scherer

Margaret Jane “Peggy” Scherer, 86, of Circleville, passed away Dec. 4, 2015, at the Ohio State University Medical Center, surrounded by her family.

Peggy was born on Oct. 22, 1929, in Marion, to William and Mildred Harsh.

She attended Radnor High School and went on to graduate from The Ohio State University in 1951 with a degree in home economics. At Ohio State, she met and later married her husband Robert “Bob” Scherer, with whom she shared the remaining 65 years of her life.

Peggy was a devoted helpmate and companion to Bob, a loving mother to three sons, a warm and generous mother-in-law to three daughters, a cherished grandmother to nine and great-grandmother to nine more, and a dedicated contributor to countless local and statewide community, church and civic programs and services.

Among the many joys and pursuits in her very full life, she particularly loved to share her deep talent and passion for raising and arranging flowers, as she served for many years as a licensed flower show judge and founded the still-active Gardenwood Club in Circleville in 1968.

Peggy took great pleasure in supporting all of her family’s school, church and sports activities, rarely missing a game, concert or performance. In combination with her welcoming personality and her flair for cooking and entertaining, Peggy’s abiding loyalty to the OSU Buckeyes was a powerful binding force for her entire family, poignantly symbolized by her death in a room that overlooked the campus and stadium where she enjoyed so many wonderful moments with her friends and family.

Peggy is preceded in death by her parents, William and Mildred Harsh; and her grandson, Benjamin Leahy Scherer.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; sons, Gary (Debbie) and Tom (Julie) Scherer of Circleville, and Mark (Lisa) of Omaha, Nebraska; grandchildren, Christopher (Tammy) Scherer, Elizabeth (Luke) Stevenson, Abigail Scherer, Eric (Jillian) Scherer, Philip (Jessica Graeve) Scherer, Michael Scherer, Jennifer (Cody) Griffin and Rebecca (Camron Taylor) Scherer; great-grandchildren, Caden, Ryan, Libby, Maddy, Cole, Breanna, Mackenzie, Skylar and Noah; brothers, Dale (Cora Jane) and Edwin (Kay) Harsh of Radnor; and sister, Caryl Ann (Richard) Mahaffey of Granbury, Texas.

The family will welcome visitors from 2 to 4 and 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2015, at Wellman Funeral Home, Circleville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, 2015, at Community United Methodist Church in Circleville, with luncheon to follow.

At their discretion, friends are encouraged to make memorial contributions to Community United Methodist Church; the Berger Hospital Gift Shop Guild; The Margaret and Robert Scherer Family Scholarship Fund #646377 at The Ohio State University Foundation, 1480 W. Lane Ave., Columbus, OH 43221; or any charity of their choosing.
