PICKAWAY – As the memorial day weekend approaches so does the cookouts, family get togethers and parades honoring sacrifice for our veterans that gave their lives protecting country. What usually is standard on these weekends year after year has changed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Pickaway County Veterans Service they will not be having a memorial day parade this year, or any public services. They have placed flags around Cemetery’s around the Pickaway county area.

“Memorial day is not cancelled by any means, the cemetery’s will still be open, please feel free to visit veterans they all will be marked with flags by memorial day. Please use social distancing while out but pay your respects like every other year.”

In place of formal ceremonies veteran affairs says these things should be observed

  • Flying an American flag at their homes is one, remember to put it at half-staff from dawn to noon and full-staff afterward if that is an option.
  • Visiting gravesites is still encouraged by state and local veterans officials. Pickaway cemeteries will be open for visitors and there are numerous other cemeteries with veterans, all will be marked with flags.
  • Volunteering. Several veterans groups ask for help laying flags at veteran graves this time of year. Contact Pickaway Veterans service at (740) 474-3650 address is 141 W Main St Ste 300 Circleville, Ohio 43113
  • Observe a National Moment of Silence at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day
