The “How To” of making your own Hummingbird nectar.

Most people find it much “easier” to buy hummingbird feed from the store. Not only is it more cost efficient to make your own at home, but it allows you to make sure no additives have been put in your nectar.

Below you will find the step by step instructions with the recipe to follow.

The first step is to boil your water:

Once your water is at a steady boil remove the pan from the heat and add your sugar:

Stir until the sugar is dissolved:

Cover and allow to completely cool.

The cooling process may take several hours, if you don’t have that kind of time, you can speed up the cooling process by placing your pot into a sink of ice water.

You are now ready to fill your hummingbird feeders. You can store any unused nectar in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Do NOT add red dye to your hummingbird feed, this is very harmful to the hummingbird.

My recipe will make a little over a gallon of nectar, you can adjust your recipe to how much nectar you will need.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups white sugar
  • 16 cups water

Directions:

  • Bring water to a boil
  • Remove from heat, add the sugar – stirring until dissolved
  • Cover and allow to completely cool
  • Fill feeders and place any extra in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Change feeders every other day and thoroughly clean them each time to prevent harmful mold growth.
