Maine Ice Disks are Starting to Form

MAINE – Due to the popularity of the Westbrook, Maine Ice disk Mainers are sharing photos of the ice disks they have spotted.  Ice disks are a rare and rarely photographed natural phenomena when accelerating water creates a force called rotational shear, the water slowly turns the ice and sheers off the edges of the ice until its rounded. Ice circles form under only specific circumstances and those often change rapidly making ice circles quick to disappear as well.

Baxter State Park in Maine has found a ice disk that has formed in one of the local rivers and shared a pic. “Some of our followers may have heard about the large ice disc which recently formed in the Presumpscot River in Westbrook, Maine. Ranger Dave Loome observed another occurrence of this unusual phenomenon in Nesowadnehunk Stream today.”
