KENTUCKY – On July 2 a fire consumed two building on the Jim Beam property, those buildings housed 45,000 barrels of whiskey or around six million gallons of bourbon.  The runoff of that fire has contaminated the Kentucky River that is located close to the warehouse.

Due to this massive runoff officials do expect that a significant number of fish will die due to how many gallons of the product has run into the river.

A statement from the Fish and Game Wildlife department tells about the newest conditions of the situation.

“Due to the July 2 fire at the Jim Beam bourbon warehouse in Woodford County and associated runoff into the Kentucky River, our staff are working with staff from Kentucky Energy and Environment Cabinet to monitor impacts on fish and other aquatic organisms in the river.

Fishing and other recreation along the river is not prohibited at this time, but users are encouraged to be aware of conditions before using the waterway. However, we urge caution about consumption of distressed fish. We recommend that if you discover fish that appear to be unhealthy or dying, do not capture or use them. Never consume fish that have already died.”
