Kentucky – Five entities have come together to battle a plague of invasive species of fish, the Asian Carp. Bighead and silver carp were originally introduced to the Midwest in the 1970s as a form of biological control for problematic algal blooms and invasive aquatic vegetation in confined systems like aquaculture facilities, farm ponds, or waste water treatment facilities. Sadly flooding let the fish escape and enter natural open waters. Since then Fish and Wildlife of Twenty one States have fought unsuccessfully to keep the fast producing fish from spreading throughout the Mississippi region.

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife is partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency, Tennessee Valley Authority, are working together by experimenting with an experimental “Bio-Accoustic Fish Fence” (BAFF) is being constructed and will be installed to test effectiveness for helping keep Asian Carp out of our waterways.
