CIRCLEVILLE – Circleville’s Lieutenant Steven K. Herron of the State Highway Patrol and Circleville Police announce school safety week October 22-26.

The week of October 22 through October 26, 2018 has been designated National School Bus Safety Week, supported by the National Association for Pupil Transportation.

During the week, a Circleville Post trooper will be riding a school bus on a morning route looking for these types of violations that occur which endanger the children as they are boarding the school bus.

Lieutenant Herron also said “Troopers will be more visible and will be taking enforcement action in designated school zones throughout Pickaway County next week.  Motorists are encouraged to pay special attention to posted school zone times, flashing lights, and pavement markings in and around schools” Herron said.  “Our ultimate goal is for motorists to pay attention and slow down in these areas.”

From 2015 to 2017, a total of 4,198 drivers were convicted of failing to stop for a school bus that was loading or dropping off passengers. As the buses return to the roadways, the Patrol has a few reminders for motorists. Motorists are required to stop at least 10 feet in front of or behind a school bus when flashing lights and an extended arm are displayed, and cannot resume driving until the school bus begins moving.

“Safety on the roadway is a shared responsibility,” said Lt. Steven K. Herron, commander of the Circleville Post. “Motorists should always exercise caution while children are boarding and exiting school buses.”

The Patrol reminds motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time for school bus stops.
