OHIO – ACLU and the reproductive freedom project filed a lawsuit on May 15, 2019 challenging the ban on the Heartbeat Bill that protects babies in the womb if a detectable heartbeat can be established. ACLU says this is as early as 6 weeks and would ban most abortions and claims most women do not know they are pregnant until then.
This lawsuit comes down just after Alabama passes a very similar law the very same week joining 3 other states that have recently passed heartbeat bills, Georgia, Kentucky, and Mississippi.
ACLU says that the case is straightforward and a ban on abortion is unconstitutional under Roe vs. Wade and 45 years of Supreme Court precedent. ACLU says they want the law blocked before it can take affect in July.
According to ACLU this law taking effect would be devastating and says that 90% of abortions in Ohio take place at six weeks.
